SHOUT OUT MN RECAPS HANK WILLIAMS JR

A COUNTRY ICON PERFORMANCE

Wednesday night a country music icon graced the stage of the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand. It was Hank Williams Jr. Multi-Grammy, ACM, & Emmy winner performed the hits like "Family Tradition" & "All My Rowdy Friends" to mixed crowd of all different ages. His music has spanned over multiple decades and his legacy truly was on display in rare-form last night.

THE SHOW WAS IN LIMBO

Hank Williams Jr recently had gotten sick and had to postpone his weekend shows in Indiana. We were unsure whether or not Hank would be able to perform his next show on Wednesday (MN State Fair Grandstand). Luckily it was a quick recovery. His media team promoted the Wednesday show on Monday reassuring he will not be postponing another show. At 76 years old his better years are behind him and the opportunities to see this Country Music Hall Of Famer are growing fewer.

CLASSIC COUNTRY MUSIC

It was great to have the opportunity to see this country legend perform. He still sounds better than most. Guitar-work is still good and he is an entertainer to the fullest. His unique early 80s country sound suits his persona and the Williams name has been in music for 3 generations. I feel it is an acquired taste for many, but how can you not get excited for when all his rowdy friends were coming over tonight? Bottom line is the audience were those rowdy friends he was talking about.

SHOUT OUT MN RECAPS DEF LEPPARD by Jeff Croyle

THE SOUND OF ROCK PART II

Tuesday night Def Leppard took the stage with opening act Brother Cane. Joe Elliot (lead vocalist) of Def Leppard sounded great again. The key word is again. Last year Def Leppard made their tour stop at Target Field in Minneapolis and it was basically the same show all over again. If you hadn't seen them perform last year then the show was probably very good, but if you had seen it then you know what I am talking about. For what it is worth, the vocals and sound was still fantastic, but a lot of empty seats in the grandstand.

    rock, rock, and more rock

There was no shortage of rock in this setlist as Def Leppard opened the performance with "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop), "Rocket", and "Let's Get Rocked." Only one more song in the rest of the set had the word Rock in it and that was "Rock Of Ages." It was a weird obscurity, but noticeable. As Def Leppard is known for, they covered basically every hit in there nineteen song setlist. They ended the night with probably the most commercially successful song "Pour Some Sugar On Me." A song that will never get old for me.

    THE 80S STILL LIVES ON

Many fans dressed the part of an 8os rock fan and  had even seen some mullet wigs sprinkled in through the crowd. A celebration of what once was and to coin the phrase "Long Live Rock!" All in all, it was a good time and that's what matters most. The entertainment factor. Thanks to Def Leppard for making a stop at the 2025 Minnesota State Fair Grandstand, but please change up the show next time.

      COOL SUMMER NIGHT

It was a cool summer night at the MN State Fair Grandstand Stage, but the 2x Grammy winning singer/songwriter Melissa Etheridge warmed the hearts of many. At 64, Melissa headlined a renowned lineup that included The Indigo Girls (who graced the stage earlier in the evening). Nearly 14,000 filled the grandstand and enjoyed a night of memories.

      all about the music

Meliss invited The Indigo Girls back onto the stage to help her sing "You Can Sleep While I Drive" and it was great to see all three performing together. With only 11 songs in the set, she was free to extend a few of them. I was looking for the big 3 songs and at what point in the night she would perform them. "If I Wanted to" was the first of the three that made me believe that she has still got it. "I Want To Come Over" has some high notes that she hit beautifully and her best-known hit "Come To My Window." which was a song that became an anthem for gay rights during the 90s. It reached #25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts and remained on the charts for 44 weeks.

      ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SHOW

No matter where your seats may have been located, it's a great view. There wasn't any smoke and mirrors or any fancy lighting for this show. It was simply the band and the audience. A connection, a safe place, and just pure enjoyment. Melissa still sounds great and that just helped solidify what I felt all along. This was a great show. Thank you Melissa Etheridge.

SHOUT OUT MN RECAPS OLD DOMINION 8/21/25 by Jeff Croyle

OPENING NIGHT AT THE 2025 GRANDSTAND

It was a perfect summer night to open the 2025 Minnesota State Fair Grandstand concert series. Old Dominion performed in front of a sold-out crowd of over 14,000. With the interchanging backdrops and easy-to-listen harmonies, it's not hard to figure out why they draw so many fans to live shows. They opened up with "Coming Home." A song that Producer Shane McAnally created about a soldier's return home from war. Lead vocalist Mattew Ramsey felt it really captures the essence of what the feelings were like after being on the front lines.

        the feeling of tranquility

Old Dominion is one of the very few bands that gives off a vibe of tranquility when listening to them perform live. The lyrics, the harmonies, and atmosphere gives off positivity, peacefulness, and contentment. The songs that give off those vibes the most are "No Such Thing As A Broken Heart" & "Bitter Sweet." which were performed toward the middle of their set. A good tool for rating a performance is by the response and interaction the band has with their audience. Matthew Ramsey really involved the audience and the feedback was firing on all cylinders.

        the backdrop is important too

I am a connoisseur when it comes to stage backdrops. I really feel it's almost as important as the show itself. It sets the tone of the show and also enhances each song's visual perspective. The combination of images and vibrant colors really took the show to the next level for me. Credit given to the creative team who put together the backdrop/effects for this show.

From the hits to newer music, Old Dominion really knocked it out of the park and is a highly recommended show if you are considering attending one in the future.

SHOUT OUT MN ENTERTAINMENT CONCERT REVIEW: LUDACRIS/T-PAIN

          T-PAIN

T-Pain took the stage to open the show. In front of a sold-out show, he got right to the hits with songs like "Cyclone", "2Step", & "I'm Sprung." The Grammy-winning artist, who is known for his electronic-style vocals and white sunglasses brought the type of energy the show needed to get the crowd "primed for Ludacris" as he called it. T-Pain originally out of Tallahassee, Florida was the perfect performer to open this Hip-Hop show. He did mix up the set with his out of the ordinary dance moves, but it was nonetheless still entertaining.

          LUDACRIS

The fans welcomed Rapper turned actor Ludacris to the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand Stage. Ludacris born Christopher Bridges in Champaign, IL and then moved to Atlanta at the age of nine. His "Dirty South" style music has won him many awards (including Grammys & Actors Guild Award). He mentioned his recent honor of receiving a star on the "Hollywood Walk Of Fame" and a quick plug for the "Fast X" movie.

Even after all these years, Ludacris still brings the energy and stage presence when it comes to performing in front of a live audience. Even at 46 years of age, he continues to branch out (especially as an entrepreneur) with restaurants , cognac,  his own line of headphones, and a advertising campaign for Puma. With all of that going on, Ludacris still finds time to tour and perform for his fans. Last night's performance was a confirmation that the iconic rapper still has much to offer in his shows and is still adding to his legacy.

SHOUT OUT MN CONCERT REVIEW 2023 BRANDI CARLILE

            BRANDI CARLILE

The most anticipated show at the State  Grandstand happened last night. Brandi Carlile took the stage and her performance was fantastic. Her stage presence alone let us know right away we were in for a freat night of music. Brandi's band accompanied by he background vocal section really took it to another level of talent. Fan interaction seemed to be part of her personality, It was easy to see why Minnesota is one of her favorite places to play. Add Brandi carlile to your must see list. You will not leave disappointed.

            WYNONNA

Country diva Wynonna took the MN State Fair Grandstand as an opening act, but could easily be a headliner. She spoke her mind freely and playe dsome great songs to go with it. An icon in country music, it was great to get to see her play live (especially the classics). With her limited mobility (due to prior back issues), it was tough to see her play stationary most of the evening. The music was still worth the price of admission.

              BOYZ II MEN

Boyz II Men  headlined the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand on Sunday night. They wasted no time bringing the energy and the hits.  They covered 2 of the first 3 songs from their debut album Cooleyharmony. Opening the show with "Motownphilly" & "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday." Dressed in all white, Boyz II Men brought a solid harmony that they have been known for. The vocals were crisp and on point through the show, The 4x Grammy winning R&B group was joyful and was easy to feel the words they were singing. If you have not seen them live, it should be on your bucket list.

              CHAKA KHAN

There are legends and then there are true legends. Chaka Khan is a true legend in every sense of the word. The 10x Grammy winner took the stage and brought music that spanned 5 decades. The Queen of Funk still has a powerful voice at the age of 70. It was a real treat to hear her sing so many of her classic hits like "I'm Every Woman", "Ain't Nobody", and "Through The Fire." A great stage presence surrounded by a distinguished band and backup singers really complemented the show. It has been a while since Chaka Khan has performed in the Twin Cities and it was great to see she still has her legendary voice intact.

                KEITH URBAN

Keith Urban (who is known for his guitar playing) took to the MN State Fair Grandstand Saturday night. He electrified the crowd with his energy right from the start. This 4x Grammy winner had plenty of interaction with his fans as he reeled of many of his classic hits like "Stupid Boy" & "Somebody Like You." He played with emotion as if he was playing these songs for the first time. Keith has a strong following in Minnesota and is guaranteed to put on a stellar performance every show,

                LINDSAY ELL

Lindsay Ell did what a great opening act should do and that is get the fans warmed up. Lindsay isn't your normal opening act. She has 7 Top 10 hits (including 2 number one songs). This Canadian singer/songwriter (also known for her guitar playing skills) did not disappoint her fans at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand on Saturday night. Her unique appeal of purple pants and black boots gave her that legendary performance feel. All in all she was amazing to see live.

SHOUT OUT MN CONCERT REVIEW 2023 - THE CHICKS

SHOUT OUT MN STATE FAIR GRANDSTAND CONCERT REVIEW

The Chicks world tour made a stop at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand last night. The Chicks (formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) put on quite the show. The backdrop filled the stage with giant video screens and dazzling colorful lighting effects, which gave plenty for our eyes to handle.  The 22-song list featured a few covers and some of their powerful hits like "Cowboy Take Me Away" & "Goodbye Earl."

The show was filled with country fans alike. This includes observing from the newly remodeled Party decks near each entrance. It's been a while since Minnesota has seen The Chicks, but was well worth the wait. It felt like the band, which made up of nine members (including The Chicks) brought a variety of harmonies that were easy on the ears. It was a good show.

With over 50 years of classic rock music, REO Speedwagon brought the energy to  "Keep Pushin" on stage as co-headliners at the MN State Fair! The weather was perfect, and the fans enjoyed relaxing, feel good entertainment as they sang along with the many classic rock hits that filled the setlist. STYX - MINNESOTA STATE FAIR GRANDSTAND 2022 CONCERT REVIEW

Having been certified triple platinum on 4 consecutive albums, Styx, founded in 1972 and co-headlining at the MN State Fair this year, is celebrating 50 years of music!
