MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES AT DALLAS MAVERICKS WED 1/28 FINAL

RANDLE 31TS

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THIS YEAR'S TEAM By Jeff Croyle

WHAT HAS IMPROVED THIS SEASON

It was a slow start to the season, but that is nothing new for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The chemistry has evolved for the better at this point of the season. There is a direct impact on when Minnesota creates more turnovers. The win percentage is significantly higher. In November, the Wolves played 15 games in which they averaged 19.7 points off of turnovers per game. Cross that with days-rest and Minnesota is at their best with only one day's rest. Another team improvement has come on the team's transition play. The team has went from a Top twenty to a Top ten in NBA rankings.

WHAT MINNESOTA NEEDS TO IMPROVE ON

Shot selection has been an issue for a long time. Scoring droughts from poor shot selection and ball movement amongst the team sometimes creates momentum swings that can result in a loss. The team's lowest percentage shots this season have been driving floating jump shots/hook shots averaging in the 30 percentile. Limiting these shots would benefit the efficiency in the paint. Another factor that has stood out to me has been opponents points allowed. It has been consistently higher this season. Last season The Timberwolves defense held their opponent under a hundred points twenty times during the regular season. We are approaching the halfway point and the Wolves have held their opponent under a hundred points only twice. The defense overall has improved, but allowing an opponent this much production has reflected in the win/loss ratio this season.

A LOOK AHEAD TO THE REST OF THE SEASON

The Timberwolves just seem to follow a good win with a bad loss. Good teams should beat bad times. With that being said, losing to a 9-19 team is not a good look. These are the games they need to win. I get it. It's the NBA and teams have a bad game or night, but Minnesota needs to limit those types of losses. Those are the games that could determine seeding come playoff time and more importantly matchups. Success in the NBA is to be consistent and efficient. Minnesota has had back-to-back Western Conference appearances and it's time to take the next step before the window of opportunity closes.
